Open up your mind and open up a book

A primary goal upon completion of 5th grade ELA is to foster the love of reading. Learning to read helps reading to learn. Weekly homework consists of 20-30 minutes of independent reading at home whether it be from a comic, magazine, newspaper, blog, or books from library. Parents and guardians, please encourage your child to read or if possible, read along with them. This is crucial for the students' development as they progress through grade-level content. A log will be kept and singed by parent or guardian. Also, here at MMS we use Accelerated Reader (AR) to accumulate points from each book that is read. Also, an online quiz will be administered asking questions pertaining to that particular book. Moreover, books can range in points according to level and accommodate the students' many different reading levels. "Promises To Keep" - Sharon Robinson

Author Sharon Robinson shares memories of her famous father in this warm, loving biography of the man who broke the color barrier in baseball. Jackie Robinson was an outstanding athlete, a devoted family man and a dedicated civil rights activist.

The author explores the fascinating circumstances surrounding Jackie Robinson's breakthrough. She also tells the off-the-field story of Robinson's hard-won victories and the inspiring effect he had on his family, his community, and his country. Includes never-before-published letters by Jackie Robinson, as well as photos from the Robinson family archives.

The overarching theme for quarter 4 is our American history regarding the civil rights movement, the events, and the people who led the Civil Rights Movement.

  • Sports Heroes

  • Equality and Justice
